The Man Behind James Bond Was One of Us
(and so was his wife!)
Who among us has not read a James Bond novel without thinking, “This guy has to be into it.” The references are simply too many to be ignored. In fact, weren't they what pretty much compelled us to hunt down and devour every Bond book we could find back in the day?
In Casino Royale (1953) Bond "wanted to spank" Vesper for lying to him; in Goldfinger (1959) Bond decides "it would be ungallant, so to speak, to spank Tilly on an empty stomach"; in Thunderball (1961) and other titles, Miss Moneypenny is threatened with a spanking by Bond; in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963) a pretty girl gets a swat. And there is more. In the particularly nasty short story, The Hildebrand Rarity, Milton Krest uses a fish spine whip on his wife Liz with full sadism. (It's okay though, Krest winds up floating with the fishes.) Fleming himself preferred a rawhide whip and he used it frequently and by all accounts, very well, on the backside of his long time lover and eventual wife, Ann, over the space of perhaps 20 years..
Ann O'Neill, later Lady Rothermere and finally, Mrs. Ian Fleming, was an attractive, clever, sexually liberated and highly influential society woman who ran her husband's newspaper while conducting a 14 year affair on the side with Ian Fleming. When she finally divorced her husband at age 42, she was pregnant with Ian's child and the pair subsequently married. Their long relationship was passionate and sometimes prickly, but there was one constant theme running through all of their love letters: corporal punishment.
Ann writes to Ian frequently of missing his whippings and the bruises they left. Upon their marriage, Ian allegedly told a friend he would never hurt his bride, except with a slipper. There are allusions in the letters to “eating off the mantelpiece” and numbers of strokes given for bad bahavior. Apparently, Fleming was a charming though arrogant, autocratic, moody metrosexual who womanized a good deal more than his fictional hero, James Bond, with flogging for foreplay whenever possible. In his youth he was extremely handsome and able to constantly score with the British debutante set. One of these girls recalled that he treated her “like a slave” making her carry his golf clubs. She was apparently happy to do it.
Fleming's collection of erotica, which prominently featured female dominas, clad as school mistresses, was what female visitors to his flat got to amuse themselves with while waiting for Fleming to appear. He kept several older women as mistresses for a number of years simultaneous to domming Ann. I presume he went to these older women to get his own bum smacked. The author of the very detailed biography, Andrew Lycett, alludes on several occasions, to Fleming's “stern” mistresses. I drew my own conclusions based on what I know of implacable doms (that they are usually switches with high pain tolerances of their own.)
Indeed, the infliction of pain on a bound and helpless Bond (always by another male!) was one of the staple features of many if not all of the 007 books. I was particularly struck, on rereading Casino Royale, of the exquisite delineation of the grand finale torture scene, where Bond is strapped to the open bottomed chair, while his nether regions and genitalia are gruesomely buffeted with a carpet beater from below until he loses consciousness. Fleming gives himself away as a practicing sadomasochist by literally speaking of going into subspace, after the pain turns to numbness at the apex of a session.
Due to his lifelong habit of consuming 70 cigarettes and a quart of gin a day, Fleming only lived to be 56, sluffing off the mortal coil in 1964, an unrepentant pervert to the end. His relationship with Ann was one long B&D romance, without the B. She may have disliked many things about him but the lickings she liked! All their friends knew exactly what they were doing because they heard Ian flogging Ann whenever they visited. All this and he wrote a pretty fine raft of books too! Hats off to old Ian Fleming this Valentine's Day.
Brian Tarsis created this splendid dream fantasy of "What if Bond had actually spanked Honeychile Rider in Dr. No" for Shadow Lane a few years ago. It's one of my favorite illos ever.
The 007 books did well before being turned into films, but it took the magnetism of Sean Connery, combined with the slickest, sexiest product Rank Studios had ever turned out to transform James Bond into a sexual icon, a household word, a symbol for everything 20th century cool, from fast cars to fine wines to casino coups to slapping pretty girls on the bottom.
Fleming was a monied English gentleman who could "bear anything except discomfort" and who scored a succession of easy news service and news management jobs prior to settling down to the real work of his life, which was the Bond books. His naval intelligence work prior to and during the war was not of the hazardous variety, but he did pick up a lot of data for his future books while playing at being a spy at that point in his life. He traveled widely and well and bedded many women, but encountered little danger and was never put to the test physically, except in the bedroom, where, as we now know, all his real adventures were enjoyed with a whip in his hand and a sexually submissive woman before him.
How like us! In the spanking scene we've discovered that even the mildest mannered among us can come to vivid life, adopting behaviors which are bold and exciting, in the midst of a spanking scene. We can jet set around to parties and flirt in the bar, play in the casino, then culminate the adventure in a spanking tryst with a thrilling stranger. Like Ian Fleming, we've created this hot, sexy spanking world, where boy can meet girl and spank girl on the same night and some of us are living it frequently, if not much of the time.
